My vaping journey
My vaping journey, I started smoking as a teenager, you know, to be cool. Probably the single worst decision I’ve ever made in my life. Back in the day a packet of 30’s was $3.70. Can you imagine?!?!
Hiding in the tree’s at the back of the school oval and having a sneaky one in the toilets between classes. I used to bot smokes from my mum and grandma’s packets. Then they both quit smoking when I was about 15 and I was buying my own. Boyfriends always were smokers, I guess I was attracted to the ‘bad boys’ hahaha.
Anyway skip forward a couple decades and many attempts to quit using different techniques; cold turkey, patches, champix and the ever famous ‘I’ll only smoke if I drink’ theory. Well that theory had me at the pub almost every day. Spending more money than if I was just smoking.
Lets skip forward on my vaping journey
Skip forward another decade and 2 kids later a friend started vaping and highly recommended it so I bit the bullet and spent about $250/$300 on a mod, charger and juices from the states. Sadly I hadn’t read the description properly and it all arrived in about 2 weeks but there were no batteries!!!
Talk about frustration, like a kid on Christmas Day with a battery operated toy and no batteries in the house and the shops are all closed!!
(Well they would’ve been closed on Christmas Day when I was a kid)
Knowing they weren’t just normal batteries and not realising how readily available they are online I purchased a set from the states where I bought all my other gear. Two weeks passed and no batteries, another week and still no batteries. Aarrgghh, I just want to try this vaping caper out already!!
So I jumped onto eBay and had some arrive a few days later. (It was still another 2-3weeks before the original ones arrived...via Thailand mind you.)
That was September 2017 in my vaping journey.
My first mod is a SMOK T Priv, it has pretty lights you can adjust colours and how they display. Wow who’d have thought. My first toke on it had me coughing my guts up. Geez after nearly 3 decades of smoking I wouldn’t have thought this would make me cough so bad. I adjusted the settings down really low and called my friend. “Yes it’s perfectly normal to cough for a while you will get used to it”. Now having just had a baby my body wasn’t back to it’s pre-baby muscle tone....if you get what I mean
I tried all the flavours I received and put another order in for some more and over time got used to vaping more and more, however, the nicotine monster in my head had a pretty firm grip on me and really didn’t want me to give up the cigarettes. My friend told me it won’t happen over night but it will happen and not to stress about stopping smoking quickly and eventually vaping will take over. So another 6mths goes by and I’m vaping every day and finding I’m not thinking about cigarettes as much, but still I’ll smoking too much. All the juice I bought had nicotine in it so I was well equipped to stop the stinkies.
It’s funny how that nicotine monster in your brain works, he creates anxiety and fear that you don’t have enough smokes and you’re missing out!! so you chuck the kids in the car at 8pm just to get a pack so you have some for the morning without having to rush out to spend your precious money on them.
Early June this year I take a week long holiday to visit my friend, that started my vaping journey, in Perth.
I was looking forward to really kicking this vaping into gear. I packed up all my juices and my mod (yes I still only had the 1 mod). I was still smoking and vaping, but it was cold the week I went, like Victorian weather cold. So I wasn’t going outside for smokes or vapes as much, simply because of the weather. I returned home after a week and found I wasn’t having anywhere near the amount of smokes I was prior. Suddenly I realised I was down to about 10 smokes a day, then a few days later I realised I’d only had 5 that day, then a week later it was only 3 a day. By my youngest sons 1st birthday I was only having 1 smoke a day. Needless to say it wasn’t enjoyable, it tasted awful. I’d walk passed people in the street or at the supermarket who smoked and it was a shock to think ‘that’s how bad I smelt’.
By mid July 2018 I was lucky to be off the smokes (if it’s a particularly stressful day I may have 1) but I figure that’s ok. 1 or 2 a week is much better than the 25 a day I used to have!! I don’t cough every morning like I used to as a smoker, my sinuses are clear, I’m not getting colds and I can taste and smell so much better. Due to this amazing vaping journey, my kids are getting more time with me cos I’m not always going outside for a stinky every hour or so. They don’t have a smelly mum to cuddle when I come back inside.
I have a couple friends I’ve introduced to vaping & it’s so awesome to be able to help people I love to kick the stinkies too.
I had a $120 a week smoking expense but as so many Vapers do I’ve swapped my smoking addiction for a vaping addiction which includes buying more mods, flavour concentrates and empty bottles to make my own juice.
I owe my future to my friend for introducing me to the vaping world and a healthy life for myself and my boys. I can now play more physical games with the kids because I’m not out of breath anymore and have more energy.
