History of Vaping
Although vaping is a fairly new industry in Australia it may surprise you that it was actually first invented back in 1927 by Joseph Robertson. However, it wasn’t until 1963 when the first ‘Smokeless non-tobacco cigarette’ was made popular by Herbert Gilbert.
But lets go even further back into the history of vaping ….. Where is Dr Emmet Brown and his delorean?
Fuel up the flux capacitor and tramp it to 88 miles an hour….
All the way back to Ancient Egypt vaping techniques were used by applying herbs and oils to hot stones to create a vapour that was inhaled.
Around 500b.c. in India the shisha was introduced by Irfan Shiekh.
Well that was a quick trip on the history of vaping, luckily we’re here for a good time not a long time.
Dr Norman Jacobson
Lets skip head to the late 70’s/early 80’s. Dr Norman Jacobson had a patient, Phil Ray who was a smoker and addicted to nicotine. Phil was super smart and an incredible man (so I’m told) one of his many brilliant ideas was to inhale pure nicotine instead of smoking a cigarette. This was achieved by putting the pure nicotine liquid on some filter paper and breathing in the fumes of the chemical. He quickly realised he was getting the nicotine without the other filthy dangers of smoking a cigarette.
Dr Norman Jacobson’s brother was a pathologist and he conducted some testing on the process and safety of inhaling nicotine in the manner and confirmed it was reliable and reproducible.
The device looked just like a cigarette, but was made out of plastic and held the nicotine soaked paper that you inhaled through to get the hit required to satisfy the cravings.
Now granted, this isn’t an e-Cigarette as there are not electronic parts, but the idea to replace analogue cigarettes was there and lets face it… it was a great idea. Sadly the FDA didn’t allow the tobacco companies to introduce these alternatives to smoking to the market in the 90’s. 🙁
However, all is not lost in the long and riveting history of vaping. We’ll punch in 2006 into the delorean and see what Hon Lik is up to.It’s a tragic tale of Hon Lik loosing his father to lung cancer from smoking. Hon Lik was a pharmacist and he made the first e-cigarette as we know it today, it first hit the American market in 2007 and has since grown in popularity all around the world.
It looked like a cigarette and was battery operated to heat the e-liquid to produce the vapour that is inhaled. This version truly is an e-Cig because it is electronic.
Now obviously there have been major changes to the look and functionality of the current day Mod’s and e-cigarette devices since these early beginnings.
I’d like to shout out a huge THANK YOU to Hon Lik for his invention and I’m sure I’m not alone here.
